01

The goal is to allow users to customise their devices and systems according to their needs. This includes creating personalised scenes and automations that automate tasks and adjust to their daily routines. The platform will cater to these needs.

02

The goal is to give users quick access to key information about their devices and systems, such as energy usage, status, and device health. This includes a summary of the status of all devices and systems, as well as proactive alerts for any issues or anomalies, such as device malfunctions or security breaches.

03

A seamless control experience allows users to quickly and easily interact with their smart home devices via the app, voice commands, or physical controls. This includes adjusting settings, powering devices on and off, and creating custom scenes and automations.

Designing for who?

As of 2021, 28% of UK households own a smart speaker, up from 14% in 2018. Most UK smart speaker owners are between 18-44 years old and prefer Amazon's Alexa. I've categorized these users into two groups.

Home Owners

This group are interested in devices that can enhance comfort, convenience, and security while saving energy, reducing costs, and enabling control over the home environment.

Renters

This group includes renters who want to improve their living space without making permanent changes. They may be interested in smart home devices that are easy to install and do not require structural changes.

Research and Insights

Homely caters to a wide range of customers, including both homeowners and renters. Our smart home management app offers a convenient and centralized way for users to control and manage the various smart devices and systems in their homes, making home automation easy and accessible.

The interview spanned across all age groups. I discovered a large percentage of prospective users have either compatibility or functional issues with their present device management app. Therefore, they chose to have access to:

  • Interface customization and Enhanced Scheduling
  • Energy Usage Monitoring
  • Shared and Timed access for guests and family

User Flow

Here is a visual description of the series of steps and actions that a user takes from the initial onboarding process to the accessing the app’s features fully.

Designing on iPad

The iPad has 3 resolutions: 768 x 1024 pt (iPad), 834 x 1112 pt (iPad Pro 10.5”) and 1024 x 1366 pt (iPad Pro 12.9”). The iPad Pro 12.9-inch’s portrait width is the equivalent of the iPad’s landscape width, at 1024 pt. Hardware-wise, the iPad is looking like a professional desktop computer. Split View allows users to multitask by running 2 apps simultaneously next to each other. There are 16 widths that your app must adapt to. Due to the sheer amount of resolutions, using Auto Layout and Size Classes is the only sensible way to go forward. Split apps can take 1/3, 2/3 or 1/2 of the screen’s width in Landscape. In Portrait, it can take 1/3 or 2/3. Just like Slide Over, the app taking 1/3 will have a width of 375 pt on the iPad Pro 12.9-inch, and 320 pt on all other iPads.

Onboarding

This section provides a step-by-step guide to assist you in connecting a new device to your chosen or newly created household. Usually, the onboarding process for other distinctive devices in the ecosystem involves pairing with the manufacturer's application. However, with Homely, we've simplified the device onboarding process into three categories: Bluetooth, USB, and Wifi.

Energy Usage Summary

The goal was to provide users with a basic overview of their energy consumption patterns and help them identify areas where they can reduce their energy usage and save money on their bills.

This section highlights the usage summary for all device in each room with the ability to control the state. Overall, it aims to help users become more aware of their energy consumption patterns and take steps to reduce their energy usage and save money on their energy bills.

Devices

This section provides a comprehensive overview and detailed list of all devices present in each room of the house. Additionally, you'll discover how to control and automate the active state of each device, enabling you to enjoy a more streamlined and convenient home automation experience. Whether you're a tech-savvy homeowner looking to stay on the cutting edge of home automation technology or simply want to make your daily routines more efficient and hassle-free, this section has everything you need to know about the devices in your home and how to make the most of them.

Routine

With Homely, you have the ability to automate the control of your home devices, turning them on or off according to specific schedules or a variety of triggers. You can set up routines to turn off all the lights in your home when you leave for work, or to turn on your coffee maker in the morning as soon as you wake up. Homely's intuitive interface makes it easy to create routines based on specific events like motion detection or voice commands. The menu design was inspired by Musemind.

Household

Each user has the ability to view the functions they have immediate access to, allowing them to easily navigate and utilise the features available to them. Additionally, users have the ability to create new households, making it easy for them to organise their data and manage their accounts.
